On Sunday Frinton were hosts for the 3rd round of the Leslie Wood in another tightly fought battle against Garon Park. Club President Malcolm Withycombe enjoyed his role as starter on a bright but cool and windy morning. First pairing out was Rob Long's engine room combination of Liam Wilson and Ross McAuley. They won 2 & 1. There were also wins for Chris Hemingway & Scotty Boyle 3 & 1, and Alan Morrison and Bill Burns 1 up, with Bill holing a 12 foot putt on the last for birdie to hold the 1 up advantage. Score at lunch 3 – 2 in Frinton’s favour.
At lunch Rob Long thought hard for his afternoon set up for the singles. There were 3 wins in the first 4 matches for Liam Wilson 4 & 3, Ross McAuley 4 & 2, and Phil Townsend 4 & 3. Frinton looked strong but all the matches were so close it could have still gone either way. Captain Rob Long was looking for the two wins to secure the team victory and Neil Smith duly obliged with a 4 & 3 win. With play-off man cool Chris Hemmingway looking good 3 up playing the 15th, a victory was in sight. And when he drained a 10 foot putt for par on the difficult 15th a 4 & 3 win meant Frinton had done it!! With all the remaining matches taking friendly halves the final score was Frinton 9.5 – 5.5 Garon Park. Rob Long would like to thank the President, Club Captain, caddies and supporters who came out to watch the drama unfold for their efforts. Quarter final date is 23rd July and will be on a neutral course at Colne Valley.
