ESSEX SENIORS TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP – Round 3

Crondon Park Golf Club vs Frinton Golf Club

Round 3 of the Essex Seniors Team Championship saw Frinton drawn away to Crondon Park Golf Club – a long, tough parkland course. Crondon’s Head Greenkeeper Stuart Rogers and his team had set the course up beautifully. Fine weather and a slight Westerly breeze greeted the players as they prepared to tee off.

The wonderful Queens Jubilee celebrations, resultant family holidays and charity golf events saw the Frinton team bereft of its marquee middle order golfers. Nevertheless, Captain Vince McAuley and his Vice Captain for the day – John Harding, were confident they had a strong team – up for the task ahead.

Frinton’s players were afford the luxury of a courtesy practice round, thanks to Bill Burns’s close association with the Crondon Park Head Golf Professional, James Skade.

With blue sky's and perfect playing conditions, Frinton held their own in the difficult opening tee shots - Peter Webster starting with a majestic strike which was long and true. In match 2, Peter struck early, was 4 up at the turn and ran out a comfortable 4+3 winner. Stuart Grimwade – giving his opponent 3 shots – was always battling to gain an advantage, 2 down at the turn, eventually to lose 3+2.

Debutant David Partridge was sadly out of form – 4 down at the turn before losing match 3 - 7+5. Steve Paul was 1 up at the 10th tee and by his own admission, could have been 3 up. In a tight match, Steve eventually lost on the last hole – 1dn.

Despite Frinton’s middle order looking frail, Wayne De'ath held a slender lead at the turn, Wayne then fell back to 3 holes down, fighting back to all square, only to lose his match 2+1.

With Frinton’s Neil Meixner comfortably ahead – 4 up at the turn; both Roger Deeble and Gary Chisnall playing well at the rear of the field, Frinton were closing in on the 5 and a half points required to force a playoff - Captain and Vice-Captain held a brief battle rhythm on the 10th tee - deciding that the key to victory, was a half point in the Malcolm King match. Taking the battle buggy deep into the back nine, Captain and Vice-Captain could find no sign of the elusive half point. Regrettably Malcolms colors had been lowered on the 14th hole – which incidentally is very close to the 19th hole!

The game was up! Crondon Park had amassed the 6 points required for a deserved victory.
Despite nursing a sore back, Bill Burns fought back to all square, before losing 2+1 – with Roger Deeble suffering a similar fate. Martin Crush, through a combination of poor luck and excellent play by his opponent, eventually lost 5+3.

Neil Meixner held on to win 2+1 and Gary Chisnall had an excellent debut win – 2+1.
Home advantage was always going to be key, but nevertheless all the matches were played in excellent spirit. In his closing speech, Vince McAuley thanked the Crondon Park Head Professional, James Skade for providing courtesy rounds and congratulated Crondon Park Head Greenkeeper for the quality of the golf course.

Final Score Crondon Park 8; Frinton 3.
