WEBSTER WINS CHALLENGE

Article Published: Monday 29th May 2017 17:52:34 pm
Last year’s captain Peter Webster was the winner of the Club Challenge Bowl, an 18-hole singles medal with a handicap limit of 24. He finished with a 65 nett. Peter Irwin and Stephen Phillips both came in with 66, with Irwin awarded second place on count back.

But it was really the ladies week when captain Marilyn Clarke hosted her first big event of the year, the Spring Meeting. The weather was perfect and the course was in fine condition. The format in the morning was a singles stableford, and Audrey Joshua won it with an amazing 44 points, promptly reducing her handicap by 3. Marie Ellis was in second place overall with 41. And Ginny Richardson also had a good score with 40 point to take third. Over on the Kirby Course, Sandra Balderston racked up 38 points to win it, with Trish Freear in second place with 36.

The afternoon fun format was a Texas Scramble. The winners were Angela Vaughan, Sheran Harding, Mary Strutt and Joan Withycombe with 29.2 points. Second place went to Audrey Joshua (with her reduced handicap!), Ginny Richardson, Caroline Gard and Yvonne Davies with 29.7. Nearest the pins went to Jane Quick, Judy Taylor and Madge Whitehead.

The Bank Holiday Monday saw the playing of the traditional event, the Bob Turner Foursomes, an 18-hole stableford with a maximum handicap limit of 24.
The day started sunny and warm, and the rain held off until play was completed. Ed Glease and David Partridge were way out in front with a fantastic score of 40 points. Chris Hemingway and Rob Long were a fine second place with 36 points. And 3 teams finished with 35 points, with Jake Wells and Neil Macrae-Smith pipping the others on count back to finish in third place.
