Frinton GC men played for the Davis Cup and medal on Saturday, a beautiful late spring day with plenty of sunshine and almost no wind for a change. The good scores reflected the better conditions. The Cup/trophy is for players with handicaps between16 – 28 and the winner was Jack Bruce with 42 points. Mike Leonardi was awarded second place on count back with 40 points, just ahead of Simon Martin-Redman. Gavin Cowell won the medal, for men with handicaps less than 15.4. He had 40 points. John Warner was second on count back with 39 points, just ahead of Harry Sanderson.

The ladies played in 2 separate competitions on Tuesday. Their 6th EWGA medal and the Capel Court Rose Bowl was won by Angela Low on count back with a nett score of 73, just ahead of Jemma Jackson. Marilyn Clarke was third on count back with 75. Caroline Gard was fourth.

The higher handicap ladies played in a stableford. Jackie Fletcher won it with 35 points. Two ladies finished with 24 points, with Susie Gregory awarded second place, and Jane Quick in third.

It was a massive field on Friday for the Michael Gates & Headway Essex Golf Day in aid of the charity. It was teams of 5 for a Texas Scramble with both morning and afternoon starts. The windy conditions didn’t help much. But the team of Ian Robinson, Craig Robinson, Mitchell Fletcher, Tom Wint and Phil Ashenden soldiered through to win it with a nett score of 55.1. Second place went to a team with questionable taste in shirts consisting of Peter Irwin, Harry Sanderson, Liam Wilson, Tig Tanner and Jamie Redden. They had 56.1. Third place went to Simon O’Brien, Andy Hockey, Luc Gagne, Harry Stubbs and Paul Mutton with 57.4. There was a prize for the best mixed team, and that went to the Vaughan contingent of Angela, Clare, and Stephen who played with Donna and Toby Oliver. They had a score of 60.5 nett.

Other ladies’ news: in the second round of the Munro Foursomes, Marie Ellis and Angela Low won on the 11th v. The Rayleigh at Benton Hall
